Why are there so many homeless people around Seoul Station?

You may notice quite a few homeless people around Seoul Station. A lot of visitors ask me, “Why are there so many homeless people here?” One of the biggest reasons goes back to 1997, during the Asian Financial Crisis. In Korea, we usually call it the IMF Crisis . A lot of companies went bankrupt, unemployment rose very quickly, and many people suddenly lost their jobs and income. Some people eventually lost their homes as well. And many of them came to Seoul Station . Why here? Because this was one of the main places to find day labor and temporary jobs , and it was also the main railway station if they wanted to go back to their hometowns. But some had no money left and nowhere else to go, so they stayed around the station. That is one reason Seoul Station became one of the main gathering places for homeless people after the 1997 crisis. Then another thing happened. Once many homeless people were here, churches, charities, NGOs, and the government started providing help here. Th...

Eating tteokguk in Lunar New year's Day

Eating tteokguk (떡국) also means to grow a year older with a common saying: “One needs to eat a bowl of tteokguk on Lunar New Year’s Day morning to grow a year older.” Lee Yu-ra, 31, who lives in Daegu, feels that a new year has actually started only after eating a bowl of tteokguk with her family.

The Lyrics of Arirang and Their Meaning : 아리랑 가사 의미

아리랑은 한국인의 영혼을 담은 노래 "아리랑, 아리랑, 아라리요~" 이 멜로디는 한국인뿐만 아니라 전 세계에서도 익숙한 곡이다. 아리랑은 단순한 민요가 아니라, 깊은 슬픔과 한(恨), 그리고 희망을 담고 있는 노래이다. 가사는 단순해 보이지만, 한국인의 역사와 정체성을 반영하는 깊은 의미를 갖고 있다. "Arirang, Arirang, Arariyo~" This melody is familiar not only to Koreans but also to people worldwide. Arirang is more than just a folk song; it carries deep sorrow, Han (a uniquely Korean form of grief and longing), and hope. Though its lyrics seem simple, they hold profound meanings that reflect Korean history and identity. ✦  아리랑은 한국인의 눈물과 희망을 담은 노래이다. ✦  Arirang is not just a song; it is the voice of the Korean people's soul. ‘아리랑’은 한국을 대표하는 민요이며, 유네스코 인류무형문화유산으로 지정되었다. 이 노래는 이별, 그리움, 억울함 같은 감정을 담고 있으며, 한을 음악으로 표현한 대표적인 사례이다. 'Arirang' is Korea’s most famous folk song and has been recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The song expresses deep emotions such as separation, longing, and sorrow, making it a musical representation of Han. 아리랑 가사 (Lyrics of Arirang) 한국어 (Kore...

Origin of “Heungcheong Mangcheong”

Let me tell you where the phrase “Heungcheong Mangcheong” (흥청망청) comes from. This expression was born during the reign of Yeonsan-gun , the 10th king of the Joseon Dynasty, who ruled from 1494 to 1506 . He was one of the most famous tyrants in Korean history. Yeonsan-gun loved pleasure more than politics. He often held huge parties at places like Gyeonghoeru Pavilion in Gyeongbokgung Palace. For these parties, he brought in over 1,000 entertainers , especially a group of women known as “Heungcheong” . They were singers, dancers, and performers whose only job was to entertain the king. He spent a crazy amount of money on these events—food, music, wine, clothes, decorations. There were more than 80 kinds of royal dishes on the table, including rare meats and exotic foods. These feasts sometimes went on for days . Now, here’s the important part: The name “Heungcheong” (흥청) comes from the entertainers he invited. The word “Mangcheong” (망청) was added later to rhyme with it, and i...
